Can someone give me an idea of the weight of this tractor? Also, any ideas of going prices for one? Things to look for when buying one? Known problem areas to check?

Thanks!

Ron

I have a MF 245 a 1978 model. Found exactly the same problems below with tie rod ends/bolsters. Trouble also with the power steering leaking at different places. Had to replace the rear pan gasket as I was losing alot of oil. Just replaced the entire 2 stage clutch as the PTO clutch went out. Also fuel transfer pump just went out. Work it hard and I expect some repairs. But agree front end and power steering systems weak. Original equipment with my family.

Have two, over 5000 hours+ total. To me the "weakest link" is the steering cylinder. Expensive to repair, nobody remans them, have to buy parts from MF($$). The tie rod ends, when worn, allow the front wheels to "wobble" at higher speeds. Other than that, one tough tractor! Expect to pay $5-8k for a decent one. I wouldn"t want one that had a front end loader on it, personal opinion. Have had to replace one front bolster due to wear/breakage.

The 245 weighs 4050. That's probably a dry weight. I've had similar problems with the steering that MF#1 is describing. Both ends of my steering cylinder have been replaced. Really pretty easy to do. Any source that sells tie-rod ends can measure the existing and provide one the correct size. Then, just cut off the old one and weld the new end on. Only takes a few minutes and is fairly inexpensive. Mine as nearly 4000 hours and runs great.

we have one an 82? may 83 was shown at the 1982 farm progress show with a loader--- we purchased it "new" / 10hrs with out the loader in the summer of 1984. it has aprox 500hrs and the steering shakes on the road, the water pump has went bad. and the seal between the tranny and the clutch has leaked... great little tractors I think but just quirky '80's production promblems
