Hi, I am currently overhauling a MF 65 Diesel AD4.203. I have purchased new cast iron finished sleeves for it plus new pistons and rings.
I am wondering is it always necessary to hone the sleeves, I have heard that it helps retain oil, and also helps the rings to seat.
What are your experiences with this?
Thanks in advance...

dev, if the sleeves are finished that means they are honed ready to fit from the factory, can you see the hone cross hatch pattern ? if you can there is no need to hone them. honing helps bed in the piston rings to the cylinders as you have asked and retain aslight amount of oil on the cylinder walls for lubrication. did the supplier give you chrome or cast piston rings? cheers for now, sibby.

Hi sibby, My parts havn't arrived from the supplier yet, so I don't know if they have a cross patch pattern or not. I was wondering with the 65, is there any bolts that need thread sealent or thread locking compound, if so which ones?
Also do you put the gaskets on dry, or do you use some kind of sealer as well.
I have the head and crank sent away for machining (alot of work needed in both these areas), so as soon as the rest of my parts arrive I plan to put the engine all back together.
Thanks again...

dev, i like to use loctite master gasket on the rear main crankshaft seal gasket and a bit on the threads of the retaining bolts. have all parts clean before assembly, i like to final clean gasket surfaces with paint thinners on a clean cloth, then contact cement the sump gasket to the engine block making sure it fits right in the rear main bearing housing then fitting the cork (half moon) piece last with a bit of master gasket starting at each end and working gasket into the centre a little at a time. i dont use any other thread sealant but you cant hurt by dabbing a little bit on bolts. i fit the copper head gaskets dry, but coat a little bit of silver paint on it if you wish, do not forget to retension your head bolts after it has run and warmed up. good luck and cheers for now, sibby.
