Folks: Does the MF35 gas tractor, Z134 engine, have a resistor on the coil power supply? Mine has a piece of wire spliced in and I wonder if it is to replace a resistor. It"s a 12 volt tractor. Also, any comments on the Pertronix ignition system? Thanks.

If you have a system that was originally a 6V system and you convert to 12 V using the 6 V coil, you will require a resistor between the ignition switch and the coil to reduce the current to the 6V coil and keep it from overheating.
I switched from a conventional ignition to the Pertronix on my Z129 Continental powered TO-30. I also had the distributor rebuilt because the original one was plum wore out after only 50 years of use!(Needed a new shaft and bushing.) The tractor starts in a quarter turn in the summer and 1 turn in the winter and it idles very smoothly. You do need to supply the Pertronix unit with 12v so I put a tap ahead of the primary ignition system resistor to provide the transistorized ignition with 12 V. You can find the taps at NAPA or any place that has auto electric parts.

Probably a 1.5 ohm resistor goes there with a 1.5 ohm coil, gives 3 ohms, at 12v is the 4-5 ampere rating of the ignition points (per the book) so that says the petronix designers used that number to set the drive on their switching transistor in their electronic module. If you try to drive the ignition with less resistance, more current, you can overheat the switching transistor (due to lack of adequate drive for a higher than designed switching current, making dissipation go up).

NAPA will have a resistor.

Thanks, Ray. I don't see any resistor on the wire there.

Compliments of Big Dean, you should find your wiring diagram here:
