Hi I am working on a MF 202 industrial loader for a horse farm. The tractor was purchased about 15 years ago and I little information other than that on it. The generator on the tractor is completely disconnected and has been that way for atleast 5 years I have been told. There is a 12v battery in the tractor and a resistor on the coil. I am wounding if someone has possibly done a half 12v conversion and if the generator is only a 6v?

Thank you for your replies. The information really helped me out. I wasnt aware that they would use a 6v coil on a 12v system. But for now even though I would like to fix the charging system for them they told me to hold off. Wasnt surprising to be told to hold off the tractor needs a lot more work than that. Hydraulic pump rebuilt plus a couple of cylinders repacked, and the bucket is need of a rebuild, it would work well as a spaghetti strainer. All in all though the tractor might not be show quality but still with a little time and money would be a good work horse

Eric, went through the same on my 202, believe you have a 12 volt generator that's hard to find parts for and a bit esoteric to do a rebuild on, at least for my blood-just wanted it to run everytime. If dependability outweighs historical accuracy, I recommend conversion to a modern 12 volt delco alternator. There are lots of articles on this site on getting this done. Think I had about $110 in parts, mostly to NAPA for the alternator. You could probably get a rebuild or take your chances with a used for less.

Dunno if this helps but. Bought '64 Ford diesel with a 12v orig dc gen having the screw shaft out the rear for the tach drive.

Got on the www and found a guy (retailer) in New England that only does mail order www type business and had one. Price and shipping was about $85 and had it in a few days. Needed no trade in and has worked fine.

So whatever is best for you.

I doubt it. on a 12v system, some people still use 6 volt coils (not necessarily marked) and the "ballast" resistor is supposed to drop 6 volts when the points are closed. Some coils are wound for the full 12v however and marked, and some coils are marked 12v with the note "use with external resistor" which is a dead giveaway that they are 6 volt. If it is not defective, the resistor and existing coil in series is a workable combination.
