I have MF 2200 with a backhoe loader attachment with a bad motor. The block is a mess so I am looking for a rebuilable motor or a good used one. A good block would be a big help. Is there any other motor that will interchange in the 2200 industrial tractor. The block is part of the frame so this makes it a little difficult. Any help would be great. What I mean when I said the block is a mess is that the block cracked between all the piston sleeves and also has a piece broken out of the bottom on the cylinder as the rod went through the block. Jerry

The Z-145 Continental should fit. Used in MF35, 135, and 235 at least. Was always opposite a Perkins 152 three cylinder diesel with compatible mountings. In the 135 the Perkins takes a different front axle mount, but the same clutch housing. There was also a three cylinder gas Perkins that was used in the 135 some years.

The major differences between the Z134 and Z145 are bore and stroke, At least in after market catalogs much but cranks and sleeves interchange.

A significant problem with that series of Continental engines is that the rocker arm oiling is dependent on corks staying in the ends of the rocker arm shaft. After 30 years they tend to rot and to lower the oil pressure on the rocker arms leading to rapid wear. They are fixable, value built has a rebuilt assembly. The rocker arms and bushings are not available from Continental, but I made my own bushings and a new shaft. Value built sells short blocks and heads too, as do others perhaps including YT.

How does one check these corks? Is this something
a backyard mechanic could- should do?

Take off the rocker cover (often requires removing the gas tank). Look in the ends. See if oil runs out at the rockers or out the ends when the engine is running. Look at the wear of the rocker arm bushings. Repair as necessary. Don't tighten the rocker cover bolts too tight and warp the cover when you put it back on with a new gasket and some permatex or silicone gasket.

Sorry for the lack of knowledge- should the oil come out at the ends or not? Where are the corks supposed to be? Can the corks be replaced? Is there any warning sign that would suggest inspection? Thanks in advance--

Oil should not come out the ends of the rocker arm shaft. The corks should stop that oil and can be held in by the tiny cotter pins holding the end springs in place. Good hardware stores have assorted cork corks, if none fits. sand down a larger one.

Noisy valves would be a hint the rocker arms need attention. I would be a good idea to set the valves while the rocker cover was off.

In my experience with my MF-135 ('68 vintage) that the corks rotted out long ago which leads me to believe that if they haven't been replaced, they aren't in there and the rocker arms are wearing rapidly from lack of lubrication.
