My friend has twin 2 cycle Detroit Diesels in his boat. When looking at my MF 35 he asked whether the engine is 2 cycle or 4. I had no idea. The manual was no help. Anybody know?

BTW: after his first time ever driving a tractor, he said he loved the thing, greatly preferring it to the various 4X4's and golf carts around.

Of course 4 stroke like any normal engine. I prefer the later AD3-152 with the direct injection head. I have an AD3-152 motor in my shed at the moment sitting next to an old Daihatsu DL 2.8 ltr diesel motor that came out of my 4X4. Comparing them you realise how tall and long the stroke must be on the Perkins giving it all that low end grunt.

Stroke is 5" by 3.5 or 3.6 bore. One helluva stroke makes it lug good.

Found out the other day that that 152 (diesel) is set up to run at 1600 PTO but max torque is at 1000. So you're plowing along at PTO and hit a tough spot, the governor kicks in and the engine starts to hunker down and tug. But wait.....you are lugging into the max torque of the curve..... so she doesn't lug, just keeps tuggin. Sounds so cool as you (I) can't tell the difference between heavy load and light; it just keeps tugging.

Mine is indirect injection and the other day I hit it with ether as I am still working on the thermostart....need to get the fuel line attached.

Anyway, on my Fords, when you give them a snort of whoopie they bang and clang. This indirect injected Perkie just started up as smooth as silk.

My first experience with it and I really like it.

Mine is on a MF 35 and I really like it too....just like the Fords..... .love em all.

detroit diesels do NOT have two pistons , You have seen a fairbanks morse opposed piston engine . These are 2 cycle uniflow scavenging engines. just like the detroit . A perkins is 4 cycle .

Diesels are big heavy critters.....lots of cast iron. Detroit Diesel (GM) attempted to do something about it with their 2 cycle engines..671 and others.

Saw a picture of the innerds of one once and there were pistons on both ends of the rods so you hit going up and hit coming down and since it's 2 cycle, it did it's sucking and blowing in one trip. So you got the work function of 4 cylinders with one stroke of one rod having 2 pistons (one at either end). Whadda deal. Sound cool too. Nothing sounds like one..... course, nothin sounds like a Perkins either.

On the Perkins, Don't know the hp per cubic inch but it must be way up there as compared to the DD. That's why boat folks like them (DD's). Diesel fuel safe, lots of torque, and light.

Even though I have seen numerous Perkins in marine applications, all that I have seen were in "displacement hulls", not "planing hulls" as the wt to hp ratio isn't as good.

Well that's what I thought too till I saw it..... couldn't believe it.

Pistons are oiled with pressure lines thru the pistons somehow. Doesn't have a crankcase perse, but doesn't mix diesel and oil either.

Quite a deal and if you get the chance you need to see a cutaway. Some genius of an engine designer came up with this rig.

Ok so I lied. It's one piston with 2 ends. Been awhile since I saw it. Still pretty neat how it works. Notice that the turbo pumps air into the middle of the cylinder, not top like 4 cycle.

See link.
