Got out my new trusty manuals and ordered a replacement PTO shaft, bearing, and seals for my MF35. Ordered and received the parts. Hot dog. Got them in a couple of days and price was half what I had expected. Jubilation.

Started to put it together and noticed that somebody switched shafts on me. Got to checking and I ordered a xxx xxx xxxM1 shaft and I got a xxx xxx xxxM2 shaft. Hmmmmm . Put them side by side and they were quite different. Gotta take them back and get what I ordered..... @#$%^&*/.

Stopped for a beverage of choice and some preponderance. Had 2 while I was at it.

Got back up and went back to the bench. Looked at the new shaft again and noticed that all the interconnect surfaces lined up. Also noticed (now) that the new one had installation simplification improvements that the old one didn't. Hmmmmm mm. This just might work after all.

Uneventful task. Everything came out like is was supposed to, everything fit, and she purrs like a kitten.

Amazing what a little patience and clearing of the mind can do for you.

Mark

The MF parts system is such that M signifies a production part. The suffix indicates the issue. Therefore an M2 part supercedes an M1 part, but should be backwards compatible. An M91 number signifies an assembly of parts, this signifies anything which is made from more than one part, whether the parts are seperable or not. For example, a pedal made from three seperate parts welded together is classed as an assembly. The digit after the 9 goes up in the same way, if any of the sub components change so will the assembly. You may also see R numbers, these indicate raw material, ie a casting or a forging. Usually these convert directly to the part in it's machined state, ie an M number, but if the same raw material can be machined differently to make more than one part it will not be correct.

I saw the M92 in aftermarket catalogs and they said it fit mine but they also said 1 snap ring. My parts list showed 2 (hadn't opened tractor so didn't know from looking).

So I figured the catalogs were wrong. Well, after getting this one from the MF dealer (at a price less than the aftermarket catalogs I'll have you to know) I saw why it would do the job with only one snap ring. They had installed a collar ("....made oup of several parts....")to stop the bearing movement and only needed one snap ring rather than use a snap ring on both sides as mine had. Additionally mine had a straight face on the spline that inserted into the pump and this one had the corners chamfered so that it would "find" the teeth more easily.

Thanks for the response,

Mark
