Preparing to order a new tach/hour meter, I disconnected the cable from the engine to see if it needed to be replaced, too.

Is there supposed to be a solid core like a speedometer cable in that flexible thingie? There wasn't one. Could it work on vacuum? I tried to disconnect the down end of the cable and couldn't get it loose without tools.

Any advice or warnings here?

Thanks,

Rod

BTW: Fluid levels are now stable after I drained three extra gallons out of the tranny and one extra litre out of the engine. Of course the coolant problem remains. It still leaks because the hose is rotten and the dealer can't seem to find a 6.25" piece of 1.5" hose. This time he sold me one 3.25" long, insisting that it was the right one. $14.14, no less.

I took the air cleaner apart today. That was a revelation. What oil? I set to work with a screwdriver and a gallon of kerosene, then took at the filters with a garden hose to try to get some of the crud out. Dried and re-assembled, the cleaner seems to let the engine breathe better. The funny thing is that the air hose to the engine remained nice and clean. The thing must have kept straining air out of habit after the oil had turned to mud and coated the sides.

Kerosene smells much better than diesel.

Hi Rod,
Yes, there should be a solid core at the engine end of the cable. It is likely that it has broken and is still in the end of the camshaft. YOu will need to replace the cable as well. In the UK there were several different clocks fitted so make sure you give the name and direction of needle rotation to your dealer. Don't know if this applies with you.

Whilst the cable is disconnected it is well worth removing the triangular plate and replacing the the oil seal and gasket. The seals go hard after a while and the oil makes a mess on the engine.
Seal 30854
Gasket 36862511
You should be able to remove the broken cable end from the camshaft if it is there.
If you need the connector the number is 33473106.
Regards
David P

C.T:
Nice website, but when the shipping to my postal code is added in, the $4.95 part suddenly costs $35.70 U.S. I think I'll take my jacknife and cut a piece of hose to fit.

David: Thank you for the detailed information. The seal seems to be in good condition so far. I get a bit nervous digging into an unfamiliar engine, so may get the parts and leave this one for my mechanic.

Rod, good move. I should have known I couldn't put one over on a Canadian. Seriously, sorry about the tip. I have had good dealings with them and didn't realize the shipping would be prohibitive. They are located in Louisiana. C. T.
