hi all,

i've got a newly acquired '52 model 44 (woo-hoo, first real tractor). both brake pedals have pretty equal travel when stopped or in reverse, but if you even look at the left pedal while moving forward that wheel instantly locks and stays locked until you back up an inch or two. when you back it up, the brake disengages with an audible clunk. any thoughts on which way to jump (at least until i score a manual for it?)

thanks,
robin

robin if you have drum brakes the problem can be a broken drum. i replaced mine with a 510 datsun brake drum, works fine. good luck mike

Hi,
If you have inboard disc brakes on your tractor the problem is almost without any doubt down to the brake actuators. These are the metal discs held together with springs and having large ball bearings between them. When you apply the brakes the discs turn in opposite directions and the balls slide up ramps to force the discs apart and apply the brakes and return one pedal pressure is released. When they wear, little pockets develop in the ramps and the balls don't slide smoothly....hence the jamming 'on'. Reversing slightly frees them to return. It is very much an 'all or nothing' brake. Don't waste time trying to clean or machine them in any way. New ones are the only answer....not second-hand.
Could be expensive. Hope this helps.

Robin If your 44 has a live power take off it will have disc brakes, if not it will have brake shoes. In either case it will have to come apart. The left brake is the one that gets the most use so either the drum shoe or disc will be piled up. It is not a big job to take them apart and while your at it you might as well cheke the right side. Finding parts might be a bigger job. I have restored a 30 and a 44. Lots of fun. Hope this helps.----Harold
