Have seen similar problem on this tractor range, it was the battery earth lead to chassis connection. Unbolted, cleaned up with wet and dry, blob of grease, tighten up and away it went.

Hi Roddy,
Presumably the lights and any other electrical components not connected through the key switch are working. Try these;
1/ make sure that the small wire is attached to the correct terminal on the solenoid.
2/make sure no wires are off the key switch terminals.
3/the neutral safety switch is located on top of the gearbox case just in front of the steering box. Remove the rubber boot and pull off the terminals (or undo the screws depending on the age of the tractor....very short straight screwdriver needed) Insert a short piece of wire into each terminal to link the two. Ensure that the tractor is in neutral and turn the key. If it starts great, you've found the problem. If not, try a volt meter or a 12v test lamp (you can make one with a 12v bulb, two pieces of wire and some insulating tape.) Put one end in one of the terminals and the other to a good earth point. Turn the key. It may not light the bulb first time because you may have the wrong wire. Change to the other wire and it should light. If its OK replace the wires on the neutral switch and do the same at the solenoid wire. If it lights there OK it looks like your solenoid is faulty. Check your battery connections again particularly at the tractor end of the battery earth lead.
Hope this is of some help

thanks for the info Dave..i thought the neutral switch was in the tranny case below the gear shifts..you saved me the trouble of taking it apart..when it happened i heard a shorting sound on the tractor but didn"t see where it was comming from..could be the wires to the neutral switch.i have a muti tester so when the weather clears up here(b.c. canada) i"ll get at it.
