I don't see any reason to believe there are wet brakes for my 165. All of the websites that have Brake parts don't show any wet disks for a 165. They do show 2 different sizes however. I have one of the last 165s with a square axel. I see one size disk that is 7 1/8" X 4"- 27 splines. The other size is 8 7/8" X 6"- 27 splines. Could someone with a late 165 that has recently replaced the brakes on their 165 tell me which size I need? Thanks in Advance; Ga Plowboy

Plowboy The very last MF165 built in the US anyway did have wet disc brakes. The way to tell is the plate that goes between the axle housing & the rear center housing. If they are wet brakes it will have from 3 to 5 half circle grooves about the size of your finger across that plate they are on the back of the plate. If it does not have those grooves in that plate it will have dry disc brakes. Most of the late models had the 8-7/8 disc. The Massey dealer can tell you which you have from the rear end serial number

Thanks Mr.Dean, I see the three half circle notches you were telling me to look for. For good measure, I went ahead and ordered a REAL service manual from MF! Those IT manuals ought to be outlawed!!! After checking with the two closest MF dealers, I got two different prices and two different part numbers! One place wants $500.00+ for each actuator, and $240.00+ for the disks. The other place wanted $135.00+ for the disks, but both parts guys said they had no way of telling if these parts were for wet or dry disk!! I'll wait on my manual, then study it, and if I have questions, I'll ask someone that knows something-Mr.Dean! Thanks everyone! Ga.-Plowboy

Hi There Ga Plowboy
My early 165 has what should be dry brakes the disks dont have any wear, but do have some oil on them, I am wondering if soaking the disks in paint thiners would clean them up! I will have a look in my after market parts suppliers cataloge and try and find a answer for your inquiry. it would be great if there was a way to fit wet brakes to early models but the opening where the rod that operates the brakes passes through could be a problem to seal.
Cheers Arthur From Tassy
