I was at the son -in-law's this morning and we were trying to remove the rear wheel assembly so he can install new seals on the axles. We have a basic puller bolted onto the hub and have whacked it with the sledge to no avail...does this just take patience, soaking with penetrating oil and pounding the bejeez out of it or is there a trick to this trade? Is the axle straight or tapered? I thought about heat but the hub is large and it would take a lot of heating..I think the puller is our best chance...I welcome your comments..Mike in Exeter Ontario

I had a heck of a time trying to get the first hub off of my 55. Tried lubing, heating, and beating it but it wouldn't budge. Finally made my own puller out of 1 inch thick plate and used a 1 inch fine threaded bolt. I lubed up the bolt, tightened bolt down against center and then hit it with a sledge several times. Tightened some more and the hub finally broke loose on the tapered shaft. Bottom line was that the puller I first tried was too small.

heat is about the only way. you can also put the tire back on and leave the axle clamp bolts loss and go work the thing hard pulling some thing and watch it to lossen up also there is a big snap ring around the axle if it is still in place on the out side of hub [hard to see some times]
