Hi Guys. I spend my time over on the Ford Board but a Fella stopped in the shop today with this problem.

He is working on a MF 85 Deisel. It is not pumping fuel. He pressurized the fuel tank to remove the air from lines, filters etc. When cranking over the engine he has fuel up to the fuel pump, but no fuel, no foam, not anything out of the pump to the injectors.

His question was, might he have a broken drive gear, or what other things should he do to check if the pump is working?

He has years of experience working on diesels of all makes but this is his first MF. He doesn't have a manual and I recommended that to him but on a weekend in a small town that is unlikely.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, my first hip pocket shot would be this. MF and Ford are like brothers and lots of things are close if not identical.

Diesels are diesels and they have the same functions that designers have to meet.

So the pump on the MF has the same needs as the one on the Ford.

I would immediately jump on the drive mechanism because if it were working you'd get something out of the pump.

Probably a drive shaft broken, but it could be a gear with a corner broken off.

HTH.

Mark
