hi all

the machine- '51 or '52 44 row crop, narrow front, PTO, hydraulics, no three point. S/N 44GR25943. one rear tire/rim less than one year old, other rear tire probably at about 70%. tin is in pretty good shape outside of a few small dents, a couple of pushed in ribs in the grill, and some cancer around the exhaust in the hood. starts/runs/drives well, generally a little run down around the edges. there is a small chunk missing out of the edge of the diff housing under the left running board that shows a few inches of a steel drum of some sort within. doesn't appear to be a structural defect, easily reparable and will be repaired before i try to trade it in. doesn't appear to be any major leaks anywhere.

the question:
i know it's pretty much impossible to attach a value to a tractor like this because of all the variables including geography, but does it sound like a reasonable expectation to be able to get this beast, clean it up, paint it, and trade it even for something about the size of an 8N with a three point? i don't need a daily workhorse, just a utility tractor.

there are a couple of pictures of it in the link.
i honestly don't need something as big as the 44, i sure don't need a row crop machine, and the narrow front makes me nervous ( i live in a hilly area). all i want to be able to do is drag a blade in and out the driveway to flatten it, a little snow plowing in the winter, and haul the occasional tree trunk out of the way.

thanks in advance,

robin

Don't waste your time on this tractor. It should go to a Massey Harris collector who will restore it right. For you to try making money on a project like this tractor, the chances are slim to none.Look for a Ford or maybe something like a Moline 5 Star or an Oliver 55 or maybe an International 300 or 350.Something that will do what you want it for. There are some utilities that can still be bought for a reasonable amount. For you that Masey would be a money pit and I am an avid Massey Harris guy.

Hi -

I'm not really up on Massey's, but I got a 44 at auction for $75. It is locked up, but otherwise complete, straight, and good shape.

Around here (Texas Panhandle) the little Ford's with 3 pt's hold their value very well ($2000-5000) for the city folks with "micro-ranches".

Just my two cents...

Howard H.

do you all think it sounds reasonable to expect to trade this for a smaller machine in similar mechanical condition, regardless of make, that has a PTO and three point hitch?

does a coat of paint and general cleaning up make much difference in the value?

thanks all

you will not able to trade for a smaller 3pt. hitch tractor because the demand is for smaller 3pt tractors ford 8 and 9 bring 1500 and up to 3000 freguson to-20 and 30 bring the same.add 1000 and then you could make a deal

ya, thanks marlowe. that's the conclusion that i was coming to myself. we got the old dear started today and drove it around a bit. honestly, it gives the impression of a tractor that's been beat around a bit, but not really used all that hard. i'm probably just going to have to bite the bullet and build a TPH for it.if i actually get anything put together, i'll post pix.
