I just figured this out with my MF35 this morning, and I suspect yours behaves the same way:

With your engine running at normal, fast-idle speed, it won't go into PTO without savage grating. Press the clutch all the way down, then drop the throttle to dead slow at the same time you gently feather the pto lever into gear. With just the right touch, it should drop in.

An alternative is to shut off, switch in, then start up again.

That shifter is NOT synchromesh. It shifts only when the clutch pedal is pushed all the way to the foot pan if it has the double clutch that my MF-135 has. The shifter is just a sliding gear on a splined shaft. Quite simple, but takes a little teasing with the clutch to line up the teeth.

This may be caused by the 2nd stage clutch not disengaging. First reset the clutch stop bolts(3) to 0.050" clearance between the 1/4" square bolt head and the pressure ring. The best site to obtain information is Big Dean's picture website. He includes a picture of this and an explanation of the adjustment. If the 2nd stage clutch has been apart and salvage yard parts used they may not be from the same mfgr, and this causes the clutch to not function properly also. It's all on the website as I said.
