John A.,Mark and others; I just did a flow rate test and got about 5 to 6 times as much gas from the fuel line connection at the carb as I did from the hole at the bottom of the carb. So it appears it is being delivered to the carb but just not getting to the float chamber. Time to take it apart and check the float adjustment and for any obvious dirt etc. Thanks for the suggestions. Rich W.

Been gone for several days and will get after the carb again tomorrow. I put a new elbow screen fitting in a while ago and it is still clean so that seems OK. Maybe some trash somewhere else blocking flow. Thanks again, Rich W.

Rich, sounds like you've about get 'er whipped. I know what a good feeling that is. Now it's just a matter of finding the obstruction(s) as Mark/txblu and Gerald J. mentioned.

I don't recall you saying whether or not your carb has a sediment bowl but there's a screen in the top of that which can get clogged up. (Maybe that's the screen at the "inlet fitting" that Gerald is talking about.)

Anyway, glad to hear the good news. I've posted the link, if you're interested, to my post on the Ford board when I finally found the culprit that was causing my 601's problem. Man, I was weeks getting to that point. Probably would still be looking if not for the help from the board. Mark/txblu and Matt in Va.: my heroes! :-)

I respect your feelings.

Since he gets a good flow with the line removed from the carburetor and the sediment bowl screen is at the gas tank end of the line, it can't be the sediment bowl screen.

And that's not the screen I meant. In most tractor Zenith and M-S carburetors there is a screen part of the thread adapter that adapts the flare to the carburetor casting. That screen eventually gets clogged with grunge and varnish. I saw one that wouldn't pass detectable air at 60 PSI. And the tractor it was on would only start and idle for a few seconds every half hour. Its the most pluggable part of the carburetor fuel inlet system that has only the float needle and seat.

Gerald J opined with ".. and the sediment bowl screen is at the gas tank end of the line, it can't be the sediment bowl screen."

I wasn't sure where the sed. bowl is on the carb he's talking about. On the M-S carb on my Ford 601, the sed. bowl is attached directly to the carb. I.e., is at the carb end of the fuel line.

Guess there's lotsa possibilities. Important thing is that Rich knows he has an obstruction he needs to track down.

Pay particular attention to what John A said and you may want to go the Ford board and pull up archives on his dialogue. He included a picture of the fuel inlet screw/assy and you can readily see what his problem was.

Also you may have some trash behind the seat that the needle valve rests in.

God luck.

Mark

There is a screen that is part of the inlet fitting. That is very likely clogged. I've seen then so clogged that 60 psi air wouldn't pass.
