my continental 135 has taken to killing spark plugs, it happens when i do any work with the tractor which puts a load on the engine. i"ve replaced about the entire electrical system, but yesterday I went out with it purring like a kitten, Hooked on to 2 sod plough to plough down some old strawberries - not really heavy work - and within a minute, i had one plug dead, and the familiar miss back in the engine. I"m using champion D16 plugs, can anyone suggest a possible cause?

Thanks everyone- I've switched to Autolite and so far, they're working great. The local Massey dealer has dis-continued Champions, but it was the D-16 which they were selling until a couple of weeks ago. Makes a big difference to have all 4 cylinders contributing!

Champion D-21 is recommended plug for the 135. Even "most" people have quit using Champions they are still available at most auto stores in my area. I bought some today.

We didn't quit using Champion plugs because they weren't available, we quit because they had short lifetimes in our tractor engines. Could be something to do with running colder than rated, or crappy ceramic, but when other brands run much longer its time to change brands.

Some Champion plugs have an added air gap presuming old tractor engines need the added voltage because they are burning lots of oil. That interferes with proper operation in a good engine. Better to use AC or Motorcraft without the hidden air gap.

Most likely it is the Champion plugs. Try another brand. Most people have stopped using Champions years ago.
