Does anyone know the secret to making the brakes work on a F40. I have put in new shoes and replaced one leaking seal and had the drums turned. The brakes will barely stop the tractor.

HELP!

Hi John,
Had to look up the F40 on the web as we have different model numbers on this side of the pond. It looks like a slightly smaller version of our '65. I think that your brake problem might be wear in the operating cam. I'm assuming that you have a shaft going through the backplate with a 'square block' end on it. If this is so, have a look at where the top and bottom shoe sits. If there is wear in the surface, the shaft is being allowed to pass beyond its effective leverage. For maximum leverage on the shoes, the arm at the end of the brake rod should be vertical or just passed with the brakes applied. If it is noticeably 'forward' all that needs to be done is to grind out the wear a little and build it up with weld and then grind back. Leaving it slightly proud will improve the brakes even further. Make sure that you get both the same.
Disconnect the rods and adjust the shoes up until you can't turn the hub. Tie the pedals up and adjust the rods to suit. Slacken off the shoes a bit at a time until you have about 20% movement on the pedal. Finally adjust by testing the brakes on the move, then carry out fine adjustment. Don't forget the split pins.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the help mate. That makes sense to me that if the geometry is out the pressure is reduced.
