I purchased a mf1080 and the power steering is not working. the oil in the resevoir is low and i was hoping some one would know what type of oil and how much is needed to run the system. Also there are 6000+hrs on the engine and is this and average amount?
The engine also turns over but doesn't start without an injection of starter fluid. Once it starts it runs like a dream. But getting it to start is the problem (without using the starter fluid each time).

Any information would be greatly appreciated Thank you

We had a service bulletin from Massey Ferguson back in the late 1970s when they were replacing the Type A automatic transmission fluid with Dextron oil. The bulletin said to not use Dextron automatic transmission fluid that the Massey Ferguson seals were not computable with Dextron oil. They said to use the same oil as the Trans/Hyd used in place of the Dextron oil. hope this will help.

1.Use the same oil in the power stearing as you would in the hydraulic system. 2. Some engine's like either, We have an 1130 that runs strong and use's little oil but just needs that little shot in the morning. My 1080 uses oil as fast as diesel smokes bad but starts like a dream. Go figure.

Good luck
Merle

PS. If you are planning on keeping the tractor pick up factory service and parts manuals on eBay. They come up from time to time and go for around $20 each.

Merle, your MF1080, does it require a seperate type of oil for the rear end? The rear wheels are dry in my tractor and I was hoping the hydraulic/gear oil that i dumped into the resevoir in the middle of the tractor would also fill the rear end. I over filled the hydraulic/gear oil resevoir but the rear end is still dry. If i start it up will the tractor pump this excess oil to the rear wheels or is this a seperate compartment?

The rearend, trans, and hydraulic systems are all tied together and use one fill point and dipstick. The rear planitary gears are indepenant from the main system and need to be filled with 90 wieght gear oil.

If you have more questions email me @ my hotmail account or continue posting here.

Good Luck

Hi, I suggest you delay using trans oil. Most MF's that I know of should use Auto Trans (red) fluid in the steering system. Certainly what is recommended in the UK. Check with your dealer or oil supplier.
