MH 44 Special-Cracked Front Frame: Weld or Not?

Recently purchased a 44 Special that has seen some rough use over the years. In checking serial numbers on the transmission top and on the aluminum tag on the front "bathtub" frame, I discovered that the transmission part is a 44 Special but someone has put a plain 44 diesel row crop front frame on at one time. Problem is, the front frame is cracked on each side just at the point where the bellhousing meets the engine. The cracks run from the top of the frame down to where the curve starts to the bottom of the tub.

I would really like to find a 44 Special front frame, (was told that the 44 Special had a thicker frame (ears) where it bolts to transmission than does the plain 44), but realize this is probably a longshot.

Welding the cracks: brazing or nickel rod and what can I expect in terms of strength? I know that some of you guys have cast iron welding experience so am I wasting my time here with attempting to weld these cracks? Thank you very much. MH in Oregon

Where your plain 44 frame is cracked, is the 3/8"
thicker location, not the 'ears'. Forget the weld
approach, post a "wanted ad" in the MHF classifieds here. They just hauled a parted out
Special, in ND, to the scrap yard. Missed that one. About $75.00 should get you the heavier 44 Special frame. The next task may be location.

Thank you both, Fred and Harris Guy! Appreciate your input. I will attempt first to find a Special frame, since I am going to go to all the work to replace an already cracked 44 frame. Ad just placed. Sincerely, MH in Oregon.
