Hi from Canada, I would like to share an incident that I had earlier this summer, I purchased a used Massey 30B backhoe and was using it to collect shingles from my roof while reshingling it, upon driving up to the house with the bucket high so that I could drop the shingles in, I shut the machine off and started to go to get on the roof, I noticed that the bucket was back too far so I approached the tractor and tried to move the bucket, it would not drop so I needed to start the machine. I was off the machine standing in front of the back wheels I thought that I would quickly try the starter to see if the tractor was in neutral as it would not start unless it was out of gear. when the tractor started I thought that yes it was in neutral, seconds later the back wheel was over my foot and starting up my legs, I almost got to the shutoff when it threw me to the ground, it was at this time that I believed that I would be killed by the tractor and thought how stupid a way to go, the wheel was up to my knees when it hit the house, put a hole in the side, lifted a section of roof off and stalled out. I hollered for help and the roofing crew run down and I told him how to start the machine and back it off my legs. I am happy to say that it has been about 4 1/2 weeks and I am able to walk a bit and the healing is progressing nicely, it is suspected that the soft earth in the flower garden helped me from being injured even more, I have severe soft tissue damage but no broken bones. The main point that I would like to express is that upon checking the backhoe I found that the neutral safety switch had been bypassed by some previous owner and the tractor would start in any gear. I disregarded the number one rule (never start machines unless you are on them) because I assumed that the safety switch would protect me. Hopefully this story will make everyone remember not to assume any safety device is always working.

Thanks for the post. I am constantly tempted to bypass the safety switch on the 165 "cause I have to reach in & wiggle it most of the time to get contact. I will complain no more.

Jeff, the switch contacts are merely plug-in type and they loose thier spring tension. use a plier to tighten up the socket, clean the terminals, and when reconnected you'll see a big difference. If that was not the problem, then make sure the transfer bar from the hi/lo selector is operating the pressure(safety) switch properly. You may need to screw the switch down farther. Harry really did have a great idea didn't he?

Ray:
I do need to repair it, as it is now, I have to stand beside the tractor to reach the starter switch & the safety switch at the same time. Like you said the bullet sockets on top of the safety switch are not tight, so I have to put a little downward pressure on "em to make good contact.

I shutter to think all those years Dad had bypassed it.
