Hi,
I am trying to remove the sleeves from the block of a mf 65 diesel (ad4.203). I am wondering what is the best way to remove these. I made a homemade puller but this did not work.
They appear to be a very tight fit. If anyone has removed sleeves from one of these before let me know how.
Thanks in advance, Dev

Dev, I also use the welder, the trick is to run it along fast, dont try to get a full weld but a quick run along the length of the sleeve, is yours a thin chrome sleeve or a thicker cast sleeve?

Hi Sibby, I think mine are the thicker cast sleeves. Even though the IT manual I have says that the chrome and cast sleeves have the exact same dimensions. Has the welding method worked on the cast sleeves? I"m not very experienced with welding, but I can get the loan of one to use. What amps do you use when doing this? Is a puller still need to get the sleeves out after using this method, Thanks Dev.

Around 120-130 amps, i have spiralled from top to bottom and back to top to sink in heat quickly, the sleeve then shrinks as the weld cools. I have also had to use a puller when working where there was no power supply, either way has always worked. cheers.

fastest, easiest, and about the only way on real stuck ones is a welder.pull a bead the lenght of the sleeve fast and they will crack and come rigth out. go fast as not to burn trought you might have to do two runs. pullers don't work real well because they are paper thin and will bust

Be carfull with heat and engine blocks i've seen a mechanic ruin a 318 block by using a welder and the method you described.

When we replaced mine, we put them in the freezer and it made a difficult task fairly easy. I wonder if some dry ice packed up next to the sleeves would cause it to contract enough to assist the removal. Just a thought. C. T.

By the way, I meant to say that mine is the 3 cylinder Perkins diesel. Don't know what difference that makes. C. T.

Most likely your gonna have to get the block to an engine shop where they can make a piece to press the sleeves out or they can bore the sleeves out. I had to do that for the perkins a6 354 I just did over.

dev,

I just did a rebuild on my MF 65 Diesel AD 203 and didn't have any problems with removeing or installing the sleeves. Do a search for MF 65 rebuild on this site and you can see what advice I got.

Also, Jack from this board, sent me a picture of a sleeve puller and I made one just like it. Here are two of his photos that show the puller.

How does your sleeve compare?

Hi Mike, Your pictures are super, my puller was something similar, but I think What I need is thicker discs like in your pics. Was it really difficult to remove them using your puller? Mine are the cast sleeves. I think I'm going to use a combination of the welder and the puller.

Dev,

No, it wasnt difficult at all to remove them - but I used a 24 breaker bar and had to apply a good pull!

When I was talking to a mechanic at our local MF dealer he said he would use Loc-tite sleeve cement to hold them in. I would think that is a BIG MISTAKE since one would have to have the sleeves bored out for the next time. Maybe thats why youre having the trouble - hope not!

Regarding the sleeves: I put them in the freezer, box and all, and kept them there overnight. When I installed them they fell right in. I just used the puller to make sure they were seated.

If you have time, please keep us informed as to how everything goes. We can all learn from this.

Thanks and good luckMike

OOPS! I don't know how to make the links work for the above post on this forum, so... just copy and paste each link to your browser's address bar.

By the way, could someone tell me how to post links here?

Thanks to all who posted. I'm going to try using the welder and also making a more robust puller. Sometime this week, I'll will post back here when I get the sleeves out hopefully with a picture or two. I also have a few other little things that will need a little engunity to repair, but I will need pictures to explain these, so I'll wait to get those sorted out.
