Try overriding the control box by making a temporary link from the -ve battery terminal (assuming +ve earth, use +ve if not) to the dynamo's small terminal. Measure battery voltage at full revs before and after. If you notice significant improvement then change the control box, they're cheap new and very dificult to set up an old one. Don't leave this link in for long as you'll cook the battery.

If this doesn't help get the dynamo off, connect the two terminals to power and the casing to earth. If the dynamo spins like a motor then it's probably OK, so just replace all the wiring as it's too much hastle trying to identify a dodgy wire section, and if one bit's gone another's probably going. If the dynamo won't spin get it reconditioned.

Thomas:

I gather from the previous posting that some of these tractors had a positive ground. My recent purchase seems to charge normally, but it reads on the negative side of the gauge. This sounds to me as though it has been switched to a negative ground from a positive, possibly when upgrading to 12v.

Anything to that?

Thanks,

Rod
