I have a 51 TO-20 Ferguson and I have gear oil leaking from a hole in front of the drain plug. There is a carter pin sticking out of this hole. I was wondering if this hole is just past the trans. and I have a missing seal or if the hole is even supposed to be there. I have a shop manual but can't find anything about this hole. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Stu -

If your tractor is running (not disassembled), the adjustments are free play, and main pressure plate clearance.

Free play is set to 1/2" or so of pedal free play by loosening the bolt clamping the pedal to the clutch operating shaft going into the transmission. Shaft is rotated to the correct position with a rod or screwdriver while holding the pedal, and the bolt snugged up.

If the free play is now correct, tighten the bolt - HARD. Otherwise, sooner or later the pedal slips on the shaft.

With this free play setting the PTO should stop with the pedal about an inch above the footboard.

If it's still turning with the pedal clear down, the second adjustment is through the inspection hole under the flywheel housing. Three cap screws with lock nuts, around the perimeter of the clutch.

The clearance between the heads and the rear plate determine when the PTO clutch releases. As you press the pedal down, the clearance reduces, and when they contact you feel the extra pressure on the pedal.

Factory says .090". We've found that usually is too much - PTO grinds when you try to shift it into gear and it keeps turning with the pedal all the way down - and set ours to .060 or so.

You need a GOOD 1/2" wrench, because these are usually set quite firmly and if you strip them you can't do anything more unless you split the tractor.

Hope this helps.

the hole is for any oil that leaks from transmission
to seep out so it won't fillup the bell housing and the cotter pin is to keep the hole from pluging up I worked for Massey dealers for 27 years you wouldn't belief how many I have saw plug to stop the leak when someone was selling them

My TO-35 leaks from the same hole. I've been told the leakage comes from worn seals in the transmission. Mine is getting an overhaul next week to replace the seals. Paul

I asked a similar question over a year ago for my MF135 built in the UK. Check my question and responses by searching for MF135 What Year.

or try using the link which I am attempting to add to this message.

Re: MF 165 Is it worth it? in reply to S. Carter , 04-03-2000 08:17:20
Unless it's in "cherry" shape, I think $7K is on the steep side! I just saw a MF255 (newer unit) for $4100. (I must of fell out of bed that day and bumped my head, cause I'm still sick I didn't buy it!) And another unit was a MF175 with loader for $5500. So in reference to these and a few others, my opinion of $7K is too much...maybe $3500-4000? (Have to see it?)
