The tractor starts fine but when running it constantly makes a loud popping noise out the air cleaner. Think it might be the valves?
Could it be anything else?

Thanks for the help,
Paul

That problem is usually caused by either a broke intake valve spring or a bent or broke rocker arm. It can also be caused by a blown head gasket between the cylinder or a burned intake valve. Loose the injector lines one at a time till it stops popping to fine which cylinder it is causing the problem.

Let's explore this. Popping is pressure introduced into the air inlet to the engine. What's there? Intake valve. What's the purpose of that? Open up at the right time to allow fuel air mixture into the combustion chamber and close at the right time so that the mixture can explode (in the cylinder) and stay closed while the results of the pressure impulse are pushed out the exhaust port.

Sounds like it taint doin it's job.

Mark, doesn't that Perkins have an injector direct to the combustion chamber so all that goes through the intake valve is air??*?

No, it has an indirect injection which is a pre-combustion chamber. Must be why it makes that unique noise when running and it starts easily when cold.

gas,

Correction time. I reread the initial post and it did say Diesel. You are correct. My Diesel AD3/152 has indirect injection, as I just replied, but as YOU stated, the intake only sees air (if the valve is closed, i.e.functioning properly). If not, it sees the "diesel fuel-air" mixture back from the combustion chamber.
