Hi, I am currently restoring a MF 65 Mark 2 Diesel Direct Injection I assume (injectors are slanted). I have the following problem. I have all 23 nuts removed that secure the cylinder head to the block I have also removed the injectors and valve train.
I can rock the head over and back and it appears that it will lift slightly at each end. It will lift more at the front than at the back. It feels like something is catching it in the middle on the right hand side near where the the oil line for the valve train connects to the head. What is the usual way to lift a head of this perkins engine? Have I everything removed which secures it? I don"t want to damage it, I"m not sure what the next step is, any ideas greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help, great forum I"ve found lots of useful advice here.
Dev.

You have carbon build up around one of the center bolts. This arcticle can be found on by web site on page three hope it helps E-mail me if I can be of further help Stuck Heads The Perkins engines head gasket will sometimes leak between the center head bolts & the cylinder. Causing carbon to build up around the studs to the point that you can raise the front wheel off the ground by lifting on the head. Especially on 3-152 & the 4-203 engines. The other engines will do this to but not near so bad. I always used a cherrypicker or a hoist i would put a little strain on them & used a 2X4 against the side of the head & hit it a few times to shake it loose. I have spent as much as 2 hours getting a head off of one of these engines. I have never had to this but I have heard of cases where the studs had to be drilled out to get the head off.

Hi Dean, Thanks for the amazingly fast reply. All I have is a wench which is attahed to the structure of the roof of our garage. On the head there are two points where you can hook chains on (one at the front which points up and one at the back which points out to the side). Whit a chain tying these two points together and the wench in the middle doing the lift. Is there a danger of warping the head. This what i'm most afraid of. Any Thoughts?
Thanks in Advance.. Dev

That's quite an obedient wench you have. What's her name?

As I have said I have lifted the tractor front wheels off the floor a few times trying to get the bolt or bolts free to remove he head I never warped a head doing that so I don't think that is anything to worry about. I have raised the head up as far as it would go released the pressure and with a block of wood drove it back down and started over after several times of doing this the head would come off the bolt that had it stuck.

Got the head off last night. I think I was being too careful. I took Big Deans advice and used a 2X4 and two winches(sorry for my dreadful spelling earlier!!) one at the front and one at the back and eventually with a few blows I got it loose. Things are looking very good indeed. There appears to be very little wear on the sleeves, don't know if I need to replace them now. I though they would be alot worse considering they've been in there for 40 years. Thanks for the help Dev....

My experience with using the old sleeves is that either the rings will not seat at all or if they do they do they will not last long. I have tried it a few times and that is the way it usually was.
