I posted before on this... MF 245 .. solenoids only last a few starts. I have put in new battery, checked resistance of key switch, & neutral interlock switch, removed & sanded ground lug..... ... Since my Dad bought it new, this has been an ongoing problem. Tractor only has around a thousand hours. Any advice or opinions ??? I am almost ready to replace everything electrical, & rewire everything. I would be grateful for any help. Thanks in advance, Davis

Try a soilid-state solenoid, they will laster longer.

Never saw a solid-state solenoid... Any Idea where I might find one ??? I have decided to take starter off & get it checked/ rebuilt, & tear all wiring out & redo... Something has to be wrong for tractor to go through so many solenoids. Thanks, Davis

Me neither. We're talking about 200 amperes on a 50 hp diesel engine (for a baseline), driven from a 12v circuit where you want all 12 volts on the starter, not 2 volts across the SS Fet or drive transistor (hard to get less at 200 amps drain current). And then there is the heat thing. With 2v at 200 amps, there's 400 watts being dissipated across the "switch" the whole time the engine is cranking. This heat has to be pulled away from the switch somehow which means a humongous heat sink.....put where?

Don't think so.

Mark

I measured between the small terminal stud closest to the block on the solenoid to ground and got 0.36 ohms. Thats with HI-LO in LO so the neutral switch is open.

One thing I had problems with was a good connection on the neutral switch. Just bumping the wire would make or break the connection.

Good luck, their fine machines.

Charlie

Does it's coil have continuity, is it opening up or are the contacts for the high current burning. Put the tractor in neutral and either measure from the neutral safty switch or the wire on the solenoid from the safty to ground. If I wasn't sick, I'd walk down to the barn and measure mine. If I remember, I'll do it in the morning and get back. This prescription cough medicine makes me forget. Oh, is it a deisel?

Thanks for input on my problem. I need to get it started one more time to cut the grass. Then I am going to take starter to a shop to get it checked and fixed or rebuilt. I think there is still a shop here that rebuilds them. Thanks again, Davis

Davis, are you sure the solenoids are bad, pull the activating wire off the starter and test you are getting current to it with a test light EVERY time, other than that i would do as mark suggests, have starter o,hauled and then you have warranty to fall back on. cheers and good hunting!!

Seems like Sibby and I tried to fix this the last time;-) As I recall you had already put "9" solenoids on it and still had the prob. IF it's not the correct solenoid as Mark said then I would suggest to take the starter to a 'qualified' repair shop and let them rebuild it/analyze it for an internal short. OR, bite the bullet and get a rebuilt one. There is no good reason that a solenoid would ruin that fast, except as mentioned/ wired wrong. I've got about 5400 hours on two MF245s total with only minor starter issues. MF

What do you mean you eat solenoids? Do you know if it is the primary ( coil) or secondary (high cutrrent) loop?

The only thing that will cause the primary loop to burn up is that you have a 6v solenoid on a 12v system. Double the input current fries the wires.....burn open.

The only thing that would burn up the secondary loop would be a short in the circuit, i.e. starter. But if the starter works fine..... ....

Feedback.

Mark
