A friend just bought a Massey Harris 81 in good condition, but with no engine. He has a Continental F-162 from a lincoln welder to put into it. People say that the 162 will bolt right in, but is it this simple? The carburetor and air cleaner on the welder look different from other 81's he has seen. What other tractors have parts that are interchangable with an 81? Thanks for the advice.

Other items you'll need to pick up: One is a governor. The one that came on the welder is a fixed RPM unit that is not usable with your 81 throttle linkage. If the distrib is mounted on the lobe on the side of the engine (with the gov) you'll need to find a head and distrib also. Most all engines had the gear inside to drive the disrib when it's mounted to the head, but not all heads have the hole bored. I had a friend that bought the wrong head - looked like a soft plug but it wasn't. Some of the welders didn't use the center hole in the crank - but it was there anyways. Don't despair yet... look at the end of the crank & go from there. If you do buy a head somewhere, look it over very carefully - there have been a lot of disappointed guys who missed a hairline freeze crack and had to start over. Good luck - ALAN

Wow ,we just did this .I have a mustang-23 came stock with a f140. engine was just plum wore out. external parts were good. the lincoln f162 block was the same just a bigger bore 3 3/16 vs 3 7/16.the worst part was that the lincoln engine had no need for a pilot bearing in the crank such as the f140 on the massey required.we stood the motor on its crank pulley and tied her down tight at a good working height.I was able to get a 1/2" plate 2'x2' square with the cranks flywheel bolt pattern precisely lasered so that we could get a magnetic drill fastened securely over the center of the crank. drilled and reamed it to the size we needed for a bearing we had. it works fine ,hydr.pump and govn. was removed and I used the masseys original equip.many thanks to brother Bill.

oh yeah another thing is that the massey harris bell housing didnt bolt directley to the continental block. theres a plate that bolts to the block and then when the two are fitted together the plate gets bolted to the bell housing from the other side .the welder was the same way although the plate was extremely different and the starter wouldnt interchange. as well the welder I had was a mag. style and the massey has a dist. but the head has a knock out for the dist.the mag was mounted where my govn.needed to be and the govn. was mounted where my hydr. pump needed to be. but I had the parts I took off to replace them with and in the right spots. oh yeah the fan blades were to big to fit inside and the water pump was also to big.once we changed the external parts we had a perfect fit. one more thing was the valve cover vent was in the wrong spot {it affected the steering and the govn.} so it was changed as well. good luck

wow. It sounds a little tougher than the simple bolt in we were expecting. He doesnt have the original engine from the tractor, so we are going to have to find some of the parts from the original it looks like. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Don't worry about the carb and air cleaner, that can be taken care of later. The engine is the same as the other F400 series blocks (124 and 140 cubic inches) as in his 162 version, just the cylinder bore and piston sizes are different. I am assuming that the clutch housing and driveshaft assembly is there with the tractor right? That housing will bolt right up to the 162 version of the engine.
