Not sure how the MF253 compares, but I would much rather have my 165(50-60hp)than the smaller 4wd. The 165 w/ loader will carry 6x6 bale on front & back. My only problem is the front tires can do some ground damage w/ a bale on front.

My front tires do the same thing with my MF 255. I am considering maybe a wider tire with a wider wheel if it will clear the axle housing. I haven't moved much hay with the loader yet, but what I have done makes me glad I purchased this unit.

What loader do you have on your 255?

I fitted an old Ford loader on my 165. It's been great having it for moving bales, gravel, topsoil, etc. One thing though, about the front tires, they already rub a little on the loader frame, going to a wider tire would make it worse.
I could bump the axle out a notch, but that would increase the stress on the axle.

I purchased a Bush Hog 2426 QT loader with a quick attach bucket and pallet fork. I have purchased a used hay spear and will have it fitted to be quick attach also. I have been well pleased with the set up thus far. The only down side I see is I have had this tractor for 27 years and I should have put a loader on it 20 years ago. Oh well..!

Mike,

I just put a new Bush Hog loader on my 50 hp 255 MF diesel. I could'nt be happier. I vote for the 253 Massey if you plan to move 6 X 6 bales. I did installment an internal pump so that I would have more capicity and 3pth and loader at the same time. Good luck.

Ive heard of people lifting 6X6 round hay bales with a 135 and no problems, although i have not one it myself.

If there silage or haylage bales then thats a different matter.

I have an 8 speed MF 135 and made a frame and spike for the front loader to see if it could lift round bales. No problem at all - although I must say the hay was very dry.

It depends where you're working. Remember that a 4WD has considerably less lock than a 2WD, so you will not be able to get into tight spots.

I wouldnt buy the samll 4 wheel drive - if your going to do that you may as well put a loader on your 135 - you cant go worng with an MF 135, as long as you dont lift too much and break the front axle!

What do you want to lift?
