Bought a 1953 Mustang Row Crop a few years ago and am going to finally restore it this winter. All Mustangs I've seen around here have wide fronts with a horizontal exhaust. Mine has a vertical exhaust and the hood is factory (not butchered) to accomodate the muffler. Have I got one of Massey's tractors that was assembled from excess parts or would this be original ? I understand that Massey would use up excess inventory in such a way. Any thoughts ????

I saw one with an up muffler at the International Plowing Match at Meaford last week. The serial
number was for an early 1952. Now wheither this was orginal or not I don't know. It also had a rare standard front that is rare in a Mustang.

Thanks George , it's nice to know I'm not alone!
How do you think they look with the vertical as opposed to the horizontal exhaust ? By the way, how was the International? I haven't been to the International since it was here in Haldimand in 1996 (the last Mud Match). By the way, I'm still turning up plot stakes in my field that was used for plowing that year!

I think that the up muffler looks great on the Mustang that I saw . The Plowing Match at Meaford seemed to go just fine. I was there four out of the five days. No rain. I remember going to the Haldimand Match. The first day I went it was cancelled due to rain.
I went back on the Friday and had to wear rubber
boots because of the mud. The weather was not a friend that year.

Thanks George ! Some of my friends were plowing in the antique division again this year - Jack Nixon with his Massey 81 and Gord Walton with his International. They left the International at 3:30 am in order to plow the next day at a match in Niagra ---they have the bug real bad, but are both champion plowmen.

It is possible that your hood is off an older model 22.Someone may have changed it to put the exhaust up above them.Alot of pieces are inter-changeble on the 20,21,22 and 23.The data I have on the mustang says it should have the exhaust underneath. If the unit looks good the way it is I would leave it like that.

Bruce - Actually , it looks great with the vertical exhaust ! I suspect that you are right , as I am at least the third or possibly the fourth owner.

my mustang has a vertical exhaust .the hole in the hood was put there using a hole saw and a 2" hole sander.nice job its not butchered ,you wouldnt know it wasnt a colt hood ,matter of fact you cant tell that the f140 was replaced with f162 until you look at the engine tag

Thanks wuteverworks ! I really think the vertical looks better. I don't think this hood has been modified at all.
