Hi to all- I've not been here before but have a 1964 MF 165 so guess I qualify. My 165 is not "multi-power" and has a "live PTO" not an "independant PTO" The PTO can be set to run proportional to engine speed or proportional to road speed. I use it to drive an attached "topper" with which I cut meadow grass once or twice a year. This topper is quite large, about 9 foot by 8.

When I run in proportional to engine speed setting the PTO gradually stops running and the hydraulic lift also stops working which makes me suspect the pto clutch. But when I operate in proportional to road speed the pto works fine and the hydraulic lift/lower also works. In this method of operating I have to run the tractor rather too fast to get the topper going fast enough and it cuts OK but surely the load on the pto is then much higher, but yet it does'nt slip, so presumably clutch OK

Anybody got any thoughts please

Many thanks JAS Eccles

Your problem with the engine speed pto is being caused by the pto clutch disc slipping. It turns both the three point pump and the pto. You will most likely have to split the tractor to replace it. Ground speed pto is turned by a gear on the differential pinion shaft. It turn in proportion to how fast the pinion shaft is turning. If I can be of further help E-mail me.
