MF 40 industrial steering going fast

I've had an MF40 loader/backhoe, circa 1974-ish, for about 3 months. The steering suddenly started to go out. I turn the steering wheel madly in either direction but the wheels hardly turn. The more weight on the front end the worse it gets. If I pop the front end off the ground a bit the tires suddenly turn to catch up with the steering wheel. I see lots of fluid leaking out near some kind of pump (I'm guessing about it being a pump) at the very front of the tractor below the radiator. Its a dangerous ride now and I have no idea what to do. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!

Steve

That unit under the radiator is the steering valve. You need to clean in there and see whats leaking. Might just be a hose or steel line leaking..

Steve I believe the pump under the rad is the pump for the loader and hoe. The industrial 40 has a power steering pump/reservoir on the right hand side of the engine. Lines should go from the pump to the control valve on the steering shaft from there they they go to the 2 steering cylinders on either side of front end. I think your leak at the loader pump and your powersteering problems are not related. Check the level in the power steering pump reservoir (Dextron 3)fill it if it is low. Unless you have fluid leaking from one or both of those cylinders up front or a hydraulic line (should be red fluid)odds are there is a problem with the control valve.

Gary,
Do you mean the right side of the engine as you stand facing the engine?

Thanks,
Steve

Steve if it is a 3cyl Perkins it would be on the left side if you are facing the front of the tractor.
