What sparkplugs to use in F-162?

Hello;

I've got an old Long model A tractor that uses the same continental F-162 engine as the 101 MH. I also have an owners manual that lists the spark plug as a Champion J8. After talking with the local NAPA and checking some plug sites, the J8 is no longer made, but they do have a J8-C which I *think* means it's a resistor plug. My question is; what effect does that have on the plugs? Hotter or colder or what? Are there any alternate plugs that you guys use instead? Thanks.

Jeb

I use Autolite # 386 in my M-H 30. Works good. I got this recommdation from others on this site when I had asked the same question.

Jeb, I have a 162 and a 140, they both have Champion D16 plugs in them. So whatever crosses over to that number should be corect. A J8 used to fit a 1950 Chev engine. Hope this helps. --Harold.

This begs another question I had; why would so many different plugs all be spec'd for the same identical engine? I'm not talking about the brand cross references, just like the champion J8 in one and a D16 in the other and one of the other brand numbers might cross to a third champion number....why all the different plug numbers? Other than heat range, wouldn't any spark plug that fits the hole pretty much work? I don't know much about electronics, but it always baffled me how there's 15,000 different spark plugs out there..how do you know which one to spec if you're an engine manufacturer?

Sorry for the rambling, thanks for the help!

Jeb

Thread diameters have been 7/8", 18mm, 14mm, 10mm, thread lengths from 1/4" to 1 1/4", taper seat, metal gasket seat, etc., etc. These are some of the things that have to match the originals. Things like "booster gap" and "resistor" plugs can be interchanged with standard plugs, and of course the heat range can be changed to suit the load requirements. As you probably know, D16 is 18mm and J8 is 14mm.

Resistor plugs were designated as RJ8 or even XJ8.
J8-C should identify the plug as having a copper core; just an upgrade over the old J8. Performance should be identical plus longer life expectancy.

Howdy Jeb,

I use Autolite 386 and they seem to work dandy. These are the modern version of what the owner's manual calls for (in my Massey-Harris 30).

Good luck
