I have a MF178 where the pto-shifter can't be shiftet out of the ground position.
With the engine off it wont shift either.
The 2 stage clutch seems to work fine since the 3 pt. lift works ok.
Any info or help would be appreciated.

I agree with Ben. Take the cover plate off and take a look inside and at the shifter itself.

There is a ball lock on the shifter that could be giving problems.

You should not have to drain oil, although it may leak out the bottom hole. Take that bolt out last and be ready to thread one back in to stop any oil leaking out. You should be able to see the ground speed gear engaged with the bigger gear. The gound speed gear is about 7" (18cm) in diameter.

Your p.t.o. shaft could be twisted and the selector cant dissengage because the gear cant slide freely on the twisted splines it is supposted to move freely along. Cheers.

If you drain some of the hydraulic oil (most of it!) then remove the bolts where the PTO handle is, it will come off. First see if when you move the handle the fork on the other side moves. If it doesnt, theres your problem. If it does, you will see a gear the moves back and forth. It has a groove in it that the fork from the handle rides in. The gear could be worn, the fork could be worn, the handle could be worn, the gear could be stuck and not going back and forth.

Of course it may be morwe technical than this. If this does not work, email Big Dean, [email protected]
