I have a 1970 MF135 Perkins AG3-152 gas engine. The carburater was rebuilt by my neighbor. We did not replace the float. I replaced the points, distributor, rotar cap and plugs(Autolite 65's), both air filters and changed the oil and filter. The engine runs rich and tends to foul out the plugs and smokes while idling. After the engine would shutdown the carb would always be wet and fuel would drip on the ground. A mechanic reset the points, adjusted the timing and adjusted the float(which was set to high). It no longer leaks fuel now. He says the engine is still getting to much gas. He suggested that I replace the fuel stop solenoid with an adjustable jet that would allow the amount of gas to be reduced. Does this sound like a feasable idea or has any one else had a similiar problem? Any help or ideas would be appreciated

1. What would you do for fuel stop if you replaced the existing valve?

2. Your metering jets go from full closed to several turns open to adjust the amount of fuel in the fuel air mix. Why can't that be properly set?

3. Possibly your float and float valve have latent problems in that when your fuel level goes down, the float comes off the stop, but for some reason, lets more fuel dabble in than should. Outside chance but possibility.

4. Choke butterfly completely open?

5. Problem with metering valve is that it has to allow enough fuel to pass to provide for full rpm operation which is several times the amount required at idle. Doesn't sound like it solves your idle rich problem.

6. Hotter plugs and hotter thermostat could help your rich indication. Could be you are getting the right fuel/air ratio. You are just having a combustion problem....incomplete due to cold combustion chamber/spark....low compression.

7. Assume the smoke you refer to is black sooty smoke.

8. Ignition and timing could also contribute to poor combustion efficiency.
