I am looking to buy an ~1974 MF 40 Ind. But when taking it for the test drive I noticed that the power steering is slow to react. It has an All hydraulic sysytem. There is no mechanical connection from the steering wheel to the axle. There is a hydraulic valve under the dash that operates the two small cylinders which turn the wheels. The owner says the delay varies from time to time. There is a filter inside the power steering pump. Could the system be starved for oil? The oil level was fine but perhaps clogged filter is starving pump. Or are these pumps prone to wear. This tractor looks like it has a lot of hours on it. And if the pump is bad can new ones be bought readily? Thank you for your time Ken

Ken, could be the pump worn badly, or the rams worn and leaking internally could be the valve but not usually unless valve is leaking externally. And it could be a combnation of all of the above. Probably best to test the pressure that the pump is delivering. If the rams are the same as on my MF 203 (earlier version of the MF40) they have an internal barrel inside the outer casing and the oil flows between the inner and outer. On the ends of the inner barrel are copper sealing rings and if they leak the effectiveness of the power assistance will be reduced considerably. As well as you mentioned there is a filter inside the oil reservoir which could be blocked.hope this is of some help.
