If choosing between classic models like the MF 1100, IH 806 AND JD 4020, which one comes out best in terms of cost of operation, reliability, re-sale value, and general owner satisfaction? Have independent ratings services ever done such a thing?

Whomever said you sould consider the individual tractor was correct.

Dad bought a 4020, and it was a lemon. I HATE that tractor. The engine never ran right, it shelled PTO gears, the hydraulic pump cracked, the 3 point hitch quit working 3 days after we bought it, won't start when hot, the engine burns valves, push in the clutch and the brakes don't work, etc. Just can't keep the thing running right.

I know most guys swear by 4020s, but everybody makes a lemon now and then.

On theother hand, I've never had a bad experience with a MF 1100.

You can buy a good MF 1100 and a good 806 IH for the price of a JD 4020. The MF 1100 is powerful, dependable and very economical. And,yes, it does have power steering and brakes which do not increase fuel consumption. The multipower shift on the MF is trouble-free,but you must keep hyd. filters changed and reservoir full.

MM:

Pay attention to this guy!! He is right. You can buy both the MF 1100 and IH 806 for the cost of a JD 4020. If you are going to use it either will do anything the 4020 will do. If you want to sell it the 4020 will sell more readily. I have run all three. For me, probably the 806, by a smidgen, the Massey next, and gangrene last. Maybe nothing runs like a Deere, but do you want anything that smells like the JOHN? Two tractors are at least twice as much fun as one. BUY EM! Phil

First off, when you buy something that's 30+ years old, you buy that individual tractor, not a broad generalization. A given 1100 might be better than a given 4020. That being said, you are more likely to find a mint 4020 than the 1100 or even the 806. In the days when they were new, the 806 was a fine tractor. MANY of 'em sold. With the demise of International Harvester (as it WAS), They aren't quite as popular as they once were. The 1100 Massey Ferguson was a "good" tractor. Unfortunately, it sold in the time of a GREAT tractor. John Deere hit a grand slam with the 4020. With "Mother Deere" still in business, parts are too easy to get. An "average 4020" will bring MUCH more than an average 806, or 1100. The 4020 was a tough act to beat. 40 years since the first ones were built, and they're STILL a tough act to beat. John

I love the MF 1100, we had 2 of them over the years, wish I would have not let the first one go on an auction a few years ago, fairly easy on fuel, and had enough power for everything I wanted to do, pulled the old 5 bottom plow pretty easy, put a 8 foot snow blower on this one now in the fall for the possible heavy snow that we haven't really had for a few years here, but she sits in a heated shop and ready to go, about the only draw back is the multi-power they used, some of them were really abused and I don't know how hard they are to fix, or get the parts for but Big Dean would be the guy to ask about that...

Start by looking at the production numbers for each of those. While I was shopping for a tractor in the 3010 - 4020 age and size, I didn't see any MF1100 or IH 806 while I was able to select from 30 or 40 4020 in central Iowa. I think the 4020 wins. My 4020 gas is not a gas miser, but it does a lot of work with quite a lot of operator comfort. Power steering and brakes account for a significant fraction of the fuel consumption.
