Hi there,
I've just purchased an old tractor and know next to nothing about them, I got it cheap and took a chance on it.I'm overall very pleased with it but it has a small nagging problem. The tractor starts really well when cold but if I don't close the gas valve when I stop it (Even if it's for a short period)it floods and is really hard to start again and then does not respond very well to the throttle lever. Any Idea??
Thanks a lot in advance.
JD

Needle and seat in the carb are the likely problem. Since you have to take the carb apart to get at the seat, you may as well get the whole carb kit and just clean it up thoroughly and make sure thecarb float is set right and does not hang up on anything.

It probably would not hurt to check spark plug gaps, check the points and depending on condition of cap and rotor (as well as plug wires), consider replacing these as they probably have not been looked at for many years. The ignition coil should be suspected if after the carb work and tune up still yield an engine tough to start in the manner you describe.

Because these are just basic maintenance items, expect them to have been ignored (because it ran), and the small cost and effort to replace these should make it start and run better all around.
