I am new to the MF 35 tractor (3 cylinder diesel). I bought one at auction for $2100, hope I got a good deal. Anyhow the problem is with the PTO. It starts up good and I am using it with a six foot bushhog. Anyhow, under no load, the PTO is fine, but when I take it in heavy grass that hasn't been mowed for a while the PTO slowly slows down, the engine continues to run and the tractor continues to move, but the PTO slows down to practically non moving and the 3 point hitch won't lift up. If I take it out of the thick grass and turn off the PTO and then reengage it, it starts up again but will not turn unless I disengage and reengage the PTO . I am wondering if anyone can help me with this problem. Also what type of transmission fluid should I be using I purchased the shop manual and can't find it mentioned there. Thank you in advance for all your help.

Your PTO clutch is slipping under a heavy load. When it is slipping the PTO or the three point will not work. You will have to split the tractor & replace the PTO clutch disc. to stop this.

Just had a quick question, I am assuming I have a dual clutch because the tractor continues to move while the PTO and 3 point stop working. First is that right?

Second do I need to replace both discs? Are they sold as a unit. I saw the Dual clutch 11" here for 44.00. Is that the right one? Does that include both discs?

Thanks for tolerating these silly questions, I have never done a dual clutch, just the one on my 9N.

When you depress a dual clutch to the first stop the tractor stops moving, while the PTO does not. Yours is reacting the other way round! (Am I being silly?)

Big Dean's is the more sensible answer.

MF 35 PTO problem - Big Dean can you take a look. in reply to Shannon Robinson, 08-31-2004 15:46:53
Fluid is GL-1 90 oil NAPA part number 65-205 Massy PN M1103.

The other issue sounds like a potential bad PTO clutch. Big Dean should be able to realy nail it down though.
