My son just informed me that my tractor has been stuck in the mud for over a month and it is now also stuck in reverse. I"m sure that it was natural causes. I"m going up to get it out and was wondering if anyone could tell me what to look for as far as my trans locking up...other than my son

Take a 10" crescent and a piece of 1/2 X 1/2" bar stock about 18" long with you. Open up the port where you fill the transmission (just to the left of the shift lever). Look inside and you"ll see a nice size gear just aft of the port. Stick the bar in there behind the gear and wiggle it around to put some forward pressure on the gear. The first time I did this it took a bout 5 or ten minutes until I got the right touch. Now it takes about 30 seconds to get it free. Sometimes wiggling the shift lever and the gear at the same time seems to work a little better. Often when it comes free while you"re prying on the gear, it will overshoot and you"ll be stuck in first. Just use the bar to pry the gear bacwards. It"s a pretty common occurance in these MF"s if you"re shifting a little too fast on the fly. Big Dean"s explanation might be a little clearer than mine, so give it a look also before you head out the door. Good luck, you"ll figure it out.

Check Big Dean's web site. He has some cause and fixes for the MF65 stuck in gear you can do from the top without opening the tractor up. The cause is shifting too quickly with our proper later movement of the stick.
