How is the cylinder speed controlled on a 1960s to 1970s Massey combine ?

I have a '58 MH model 60 PT combine that I would like to use on dry beans. With the largest sprocket (43 T) on the cylinder, it breaks more than a few soybeans. When I tried black turtle dry beans, about half of them were broken.

I am looking for a way to slow down the cylinder and still run at WOT, for the fanning mill. Any ideas ?

Thanks

Greg

The settings for all beans, Edible, soy,Lentils, Sunflower Peas are all the same with normal conditions 470 RPM with cylinder sprocket with 43 teeth, Special conditions, Dry, 389 and 52 and tough 594 and 34. Concave adjustment Normal open front 5/8", Rear 3/16", Dry 3/4" & 1/4", Tough 1/4" & 1/8". Loose concave wires out. Fanning mill shutter, full open, Lower deflector position 2 1/8" Upper seive 1/3 and round hole 5/8". These speeds are with 22 & 11 tooth triple sprocket on front beater shaft, standard equipment. Optional equipment 13 & 11 tooth, special, speeds are 34 - 352, 43 - 278, 52 - 230, very low range when required for peas, edible beans, etc. Also the platform auger should run at 140 RPM or 118 Rpm wit 19 tooth or 16 tooth sprocket instead of the 27 tooth and 200 RPM for wheat and beater in front of cylinder full throtal, no load , speed of 920 RPM. I am guessing that you have no manual and I have Massey - Harris No. 60 P.T. Combine (Pull type) Assembling and Operating Instructions 650 876 M1 that is obout 70 pages and I do make copies for people at my cost, they were $.10 per page plus tax and postage. If interested let me know. Lester Leroy Helmlinger, Wapakoneta Ohio

Thanks for the offer, my manual is Form No. 690 330 M1, only 64 pages. When I looked in the parts book (650 733 M3), it calls for a 22 T double and an 11 T single (pn 216 270 M21) for serial number 300 986 and up. I've got sn 305 241. I see now that the older units have an optional 13T double.

Do you think that it would fit ? If so, is there any chance that you have a triple sprocket, pn 213 495 M11, or know of one ? I would also be interested in the 52 T sprocket ( pn 210 303 M2 ) for the cylinder.

Thanks

Greg

I have only the book, book colector, but never had or was around any of the machines so I can not help you with parts, there are 2 combine parts yards near me that I could find a phone number for you if you are interested. My book is dated March of 55. Hope the information was usefull to you, Lester

Riverbend,

The 300, 410, 510 combines had a set of pulleys on the right hand side that controlled cylinder speed. The bottom pulley was spring loaded to the maximum diameter and the upper pulley diameter was changed by a threaded hub that was operated from the cab. The upper pulley was the drive (off the beater shaft); the lower pulley was driven and connected to the cylinder shaft with a double row chain. You could also inter change the driven sprockets for the cylinder to obtain large changes in cylinder speed. Not sure about the MHs but you will probably have to change some belts or pulleys there too. Hope this helps

Tommy,

That sounds pretty promising. Maybe they added an adjustable sheave to the beater and an idler to their old design. I think I need to find a 510 to look at. Too bad our public library does not have parts books on the shelf. Thanks

Riverbend,

I assume you have an adjustment on the concave around the cylinder. The combines I worked on also had an adjustment on the rear of the concave near the beater. We usually opened that up a bit later on in the soybean and corn seasons (when everything was drier) to stop some of the seed cracking. Don"t open it too much; it will miss shelling some seed pods.
