Hi,

I have a MF 65 with a 203-diesel with an indirect injection engine. Would someone be able to tell me the procedure for adjusting the tappets? I have the IT manual but it only gives me the clearances - 0.012 cold, and 0.010 hot - but does not tell me how to adjust them.

I would sure appreciate any help in this matter.

Mike

What you are doing is insuring that when the camshaft releases the valve, it closes fully. A mid ground has to be met between too much slack, which makes for tick tick tick and not enough where the valve doesn't seat fully.

So you are interested in the area where the valve is seated, and some rotation of the crankshaft doesn't produce any movement of the rocker arm for that valve.

There are positions where you can tweak half of them then going to a second position will allow you to do the rest, but I forget (can't find it) and just do them one at a time.

Set up a valve so that roughly 30 degrees of crankshaft rotation produces no rocker movement. Slide the .012 gauge (cold adj) between the rocker arm and the tip of the valve. There should be sliding friction; means you can feel slight resistance as you slide the feeler strip between them.

If you don't feel what I said, on the other end of that rocker is a lock nut and screw, or just a hard to turn screw with a hex top on it (self locking). If with nut, unlock nut and screw screw till gauge pulls right; then lock nut but don't let screw move while doing it. Recheck with gauge when finished. Repeat as necessary. Without lock nut, just turn screw with boxed end hex wrench of the appropriate size till you get there.

Rotate crank till another valve does as this one and repeat process.

Mark

support tappets to remove camshaft in reply to txblu, 08-09-2004 06:18:22
This is not a followup, but you seem to know about tappets. On 202 Work Bull with a z134 Continental Engine, manual says to "support" tapes before pulling camshaft. How can I do that?
