I'm bringing this tractor(SGM 518173) back to life after it's been sitting in the weeds for at least 5 years. The owner said that when they parked it for the last time, he knew that it would never run again. It smoked so bad you could't see the tractor and the driver couldn't see where he was driving, is how he explained it. I got it to run after replacing the condensor and it really didn't smoke that bad. Testament to how well they made tractors back then. I found low compression (80 dry/120 wet) on the # 1 cylinder. When I took it apart the # 3 piston had some damage due to a piece of the top ring breaking off and taking a chunk of the piston top with it. The strange thing I first noticed about this tractor is that it didn't have a hint of ever having a 3 point hitch on it. The areas where the rockshaft, position control quadrant and the draft control spring should have been, were blanked of with steel discs bolted in place. When I took the hyd. lift cover off, there was no hydraulic pump and no lift cylinder. There is a framework to support the the pump/pto shaft and you can see the cams that would drive the pump if one was there. I was surprised that the factory would go to the trouble of running a separate line for non-3point tractors. Maybe a MF historian could shed some light on why a Massey-Ferguson tractor would be assembled without Harry Ferguson's famous 3pt hitch on it?

This is a 1958 Massey-Ferguson Utility model, probably used for an industrial appliction such as towing where the three-point lift system was not needed.

Well that would make sense, except that I have a utility 35 (UGM 655001223) and it has a 3 point. The 50 is an SGM and it doesn't have the three point, Go figure. Jim
