My brother-in-law owns a Massey, I am in the process of repairing somethings that are in need of it for him. Anyhow, my question referes to what exactely is this tractor? On the side, i.e., the hood covering the gas tank, it show MASSEY FURGUSON 50, though on the serial plate by steering column, the model listed is a MH-50, with a serial number = SGM 510857 ?? kinda confusing to us, but then again we are not that up on tractors either. lol Any clarification would be awesome. Thanks

The tractor you mention is a 1957 Massey-Harris 50. It became the MF 50 in 1958. The decals on the sides of the hood should have read "Massey-Harris 50". Often times dealers would replace the decals with the "Massey Ferguson" version to make the tractor appear to be newer.

In 1956 & 1957 they built to version of that tractor one was a MH50 the other was an F40 the MH50 was sold by the Massey Harris dealers the F40 was sold by the Harry Ferguson dealers the production models F40 were beige & gray The MH50 was the Massey Ferguson red and gray. After the merger was complete in late 1957 or early 1958 both of these tractors became the MF50. The MH50 had the top corners of the hood concave from front to back the MF50 those corners were round. Your serial number is for a 1957 MH50 the {S} is for standard width the {G} is a gas engine the {M} is for a dual clutch Paul Nelson can probably give you a lot more Information on the dates of those tractors.
