Hi, Joe Ligon here, I have a Massey Ferguson 240, a '95 model I think. It is a great tractor but has developed what appears to be a fuel delivery problem as follows: It starts easily and runs along good for about 30-45 minutes with no unusual symtoms. Then, while under load, the engine will suddenly speed up about 200 rpm and then about a minute later, it will die, as if it is out of diesel. Then it will not start normally unless I pump the primer real fast while cranking it, or squirt some engine starting fluid in the air cleaner. Alternatively, if I wait untl it is cold again, it starts right up! When it starts, it is good then for another 30-45 minutes. I have changed the fuel filters, bled the fuel system, made sure it had plenty of clean diesel - all to no avail. Any suggestions/observations will be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Joe

Hi all, thanks for the help. I finally found the problem. Blew back through the fuel line from the 1st filter to the fuel tank. Line was stopped up. Everything has been fine for the past six months so I guess it is fixed.

Joe, if you keep squirting starting fluid in a hot engine like that it will not be long until you have a major rebuild, or maybe a whole new engine. The Perkins engine does not take kindly to excess use of srarting fluid.
Could be filter in fuel tank cap. Could be lift pump going bad. Both are very easy fixes. You can replace the lift pump in less than an hour. Good luck. Recommend you get 3 MF brand manuals for your tractor: Operator Manual, Repair Manual and Parts Manual.

I am having problems with diesel leaking into the oil pan on my M/F 1020. Do you know what component needs to be replaced or rebulit??
What other components should be checked to narrow this problem to one specific item without guessing and waisting money on parts not needed?

There's a filter on the fuel tap in the tank. Take it out and throw it as far as possible. Clean out the lift pump and all should be OK.
