I tried to do most of the items in the 10, 100, and 500 hour services this past weekend.

One of the items was to drain the final drives and replace the fluid to within 1/4 inch of fill hole.

The manual doesn't tell you how to drain them and I didn't see any plugs at the bottom. Basically mine were so low I ended up adding about 3-4 quarts to each so it is pretty fresh. But for future reference what is the proper way to drain those things?

The MF255 has wet disc brakes. The very early tractor that had wet disc brakes still had the seals in the rear axle housings like the tractors with dry disc brakes had. Those you have to check & fill the planetaries at the check plug. These were only built in the first few that came with wet disc brakes. Most of them do not have the seals between the the planetaries & the rear center housing those the oil runs over from the rear center housing into the planetaries. Those you do not have to fill the planetaries at the check plug. & they will not have oil up to the check plugs. A lot of the manual do not tell you this & tell you the check them at the plugs.

Thanks Big Dean! in reply to Big Dean, 08-02-2004 16:46:34
That explains a lot. Annoying the manual isn't right-but then I bought the tractor used and got a manual online so maybe that is my fault.

I changed all the fluids in one day and I swore I had the main hydraulic exactly full. Then I added several quarts to the right final drive and when I checked later I noticed the main was a little high-I didn't draw the link and thought I was just mistaken earlier.

I appreciate your help!

Now, do I need to take a couple quarts out or will it hurt to run a little over full for a while?
