I put a new needle and seat in a Marvel-Schribbler carb. It wasn't idling right before I worked on it. Plus the float bowl would run over. I thought I had everything cleaned up real good. I sprayed carb cleaner down all the passages. Now I can get it to idle but not quite right. As you slow it down with the throttle stop adjustment screw it slows down to just about where it should be idling and then just suddenly dies. Also, if I turn the load screw in while it is idling, I can also make it die. When I had it apart I noticed two holes in the throttle bore by the throttle plate. I assume one is for idle and one is for coming off idle. Is this correct? Could one of these be partially plugged yet causing it not to idle like it should? Also, when I put the carb back on the tractor, I noticed that the governer linkage from the gov. to the throttle shaft wasn't adjusted properly. So I adjusted it according to the owners manual. So that the throttle shaft would open completely. Then when I started it up, when you came off idle, it went to full throttle. There seems to be a large dead spot in the gov. I had to readjust the linkage so the throttle plate would not open all the way to get it to work fairly well. I noticed a set-screw with a jam nut on the back side of the gov. Do you think adjusting this would help or do you think there is internal problems with the gov? Thanks for any advice.

The two holes you describe are what Massey Harris called auxiliary fuel passages. In essence they are the idle speed jet. There should be a plug on the outside of the carburetor throat that can be removed and both passages blown or cleaned out.Since you can effectively kill the engine by screwing the load spped jet,I would expect the idle passage is plugged with dirt or???I usually find the best way to set the load speed jet is to slowly screw the jet in until the engine starts to lose RPMs and then open the jet up one full turn after opening it to where it reaches full speed. Most engine govenors I have ever worked are adjusted by (engine off)opening the throttle wide open and holding the throttle plate wide open and then adjusting the linkage to where it lacks a half a hole of reaching the throttle lever hole.If the engine speed hunts, shorten the govenor linkaga a turn at a time until it stops hunting.

It sounds as if your governor forks may be broken, or dropped a key out, or,or,or. To check, bring it down to idle, then by hand pull the trhottle linkage to open up the throttle plate. The governor should fight against you. If you don"t have any resistance, you need to check the internals of the governor.

There is an idle speed screw on the throttle shaft, and an idle mixture screw near the mounting flange. Adjust the idle speed screw to get the proper RPMs, and the mixture screw to get the proper mixture. Turn the mixture screw in til it runs rough, then out til it smooths up. The high speed mixture is the one on the bottom of the float bowl.
