My son and I were talking to a friend who has a New Idea 708 power unit and he was saying how badly it blows black smoke. We got to thinking and our neighbor had a Massey 1105 that smoked really bad. A few years back we had a fellow cut some speltz in the summer and come back in the fall and shell some corn with a Massey 550 combine and it smoked. If I'm not mistaken all three of these machines has a 354 perkins motor in them. Is that natural for this motor.

Combines and choppers typically run at full throttle, whether fully loaded or not,and the 354 may smoke a little at full throttle. Our Massey 1100 is used mainly for pulling a 6-row no-till planter at 1700-1800 rpm with good power,no smoke and excellent fuel economy. We did have occasion to hook it to a 6-16 moldboard plow, and while I didn't see a lot of smoke while plowing that night, when pulling uphill there was a good 10" flame from the exhaust stack. A very solid, dependable engine.

For several years, Perkins had a bad batch of smoke rings.

(Just kidding!) We had a bunch of Massey combines in our area, and they all smoked. They seemed to get good fuel economy, though. When some of my "GREEN" neighbors commented on the Masseys, I always told them they had bad smoke rings! GREEN guys will believe almost anything about "OTHER" colors!

We had a MF 1100 fitted with a Perkins A6.354 and it tended to "cough a bit". Our neighbour had a MF 1200 (4wd artic steer) with the same engine and it was bloody awful! It looked like a volcano going up and down the field. I remember seeing a programme on TV about an Agricultural Contractor in the USA who had a fleet of MF760 combines, travelling south to north as the season progressed. I remember how those combines smoked! (I think the 760 used that engine too)

Hi,
In the UK, the 760 combine was fitted with a V8.540 engine to MF spec. The 750 and755 combines had a turbo'd AT6.354.4 engine.

The first 760 was built in 1972 with a 354-AT6 engine The 540 V8 was installed some time after 1977.As I remember, age seems to fog the memory (MF retired)

I'd say it isn't set up right. I have an Oliver 1850 diesel with a 354 Perkins. It has 100HP with stock head and fuel pump not turned up all the way and it doesn't smoke at all. I mainly use the tractor to spray, so I don't need alot of power. I also have another 1850 that I use to pull at the tractor pulls. It has 180HP with a 10mm head in the fuel pump turned up all the way. I have a Switzer turbo charger, the same one they put on a 359ci Cummins when they want to turn it up. It burns all the fuel and hardly smokes at all. My fuel pump guy said we'd never burn all the fuel, guess he was wrong. Hope this helps.

354 Perkins; Sounds like most of the examples given have never benefitted from the good advice and guidance of UK ROY and his team of Diesel tweakers. Maybe the details of such experts will get out to more of the 354 users.

I have never "tweaked" an engine in my life! The tractor smoked from new until we sold it. The dealer we bought it from said it was natural! Not as bad as those awful Fords they used to make over here though!
