We've got a Massey 255 with a 3 position PTO. It grinds pretty bad when trying to engage. Is this something that can be adjusted to fix?

Are you pushing the clutch all the way down? Have to do this on models w/ just live PTO. Otherwise check your adjustment. They are set up so 1/2 way down stops ground movement and you can shift. All the way down kill PTO, 3pt/ hyd pump. Etc...

it could be the P.T.O. clutch.

Mine grinds a little (as in lightly) when engaging PTO unless I hold clutch fully depressed for several seconds before engaging.

Tried adjusting linkage which did eliminate most but not all the grinding. Have learned to live with it.
