Massey 255 Power Steering Line

I have a Massey 255 I recently aquired and popped a power steering line this weekend. It is the one on the left hand side of the tractor that runs from the steering column to the front left of the radiator.

As I started changing it I noticed all the other lines in that system are steel.

Was that one origionally steel and has been replaced by the previous owner with a rubber line or did it acutally come that way?

Also, once I get it back on are there any tricks to getting the air out of the system so I can actually steer the tractor again? :)

We still have the original line on the 255, it is rubber from the factory. Don't know why, vibration??

I have had similar problems with my MF 255 power steering lines. The solution for me was to have the local auto parts store make up a hydraulic hose with the correct fittings. Works just as good as the original steel and they are easier to install.

Now the pump itself is another story. I have a MF 255 as well as a MF 275. Both have the Parker Hanifen pumps and both have had to be replaced entirely. Also the front seals go out and leak PS oil into the engine. The MF dealer says there is no other replacement available other than the Parker Hanifen pumps. Problem is they cost right at $300 every time. Grrrr!

How did you know it was leaking fluid into the engine oil? That doesn't sound good at all!!!

You will know the oil is going somewhere when the power steering starts to get hard to turn and needs oil. Usually there is no external leak. Meanwhile after a lot of hours of use, the engine hasn't used any oil--beacuse it is gaining oil from the PS pump.

The obvious answer is the front seal is leaking on the PS pump. It is only a $15 part and easy to replace.
